🐑 Nikoloudes – The Shepherd’s Hamlet and the 900-Year-Old Plane Tree

Nikoloudes is a small but historic hamlet in northwestern Samos. It sits at an altitude of around 400 meters, nestled on the slopes of Mount Kastrí, between the villages of Lekka and Kosmadaioi. The area is lush with greenery, flowing waters, and a serene mountain atmosphere.

🧑‍🌾 Origins & Name

The settlement was named after its first inhabitant, Nikolou, a shepherd who built a small hut to watch over his livestock. Over time, others began building their own huts nearby, forming a small community that evolved into what we now call Nikoloudes.

🏡 Architecture & Layout

The hamlet preserves traditional stone houses and old shepherd huts, connected by narrow cobbled paths. The built environment remains unspoiled by modern development, maintaining a strong sense of authenticity and timeless rural charm.

🌳 The Legendary Plane Tree

At the edge of the village stands a remarkable centuries-old plane tree, considered a local natural monument. Based on local accounts and research, this tree is believed to be around 900 years old, reaching an impressive height of 30 meters. It is a symbol of longevity and harmony with nature.

🚿 The Old Washhouse

One of the village’s quiet highlights is its old communal washhouse, where women used to gather for daily chores and conversation. An engraving on the stone suggests it was built in the 16th century AD, making it one of the oldest preserved public structures in the area.

The local economy continues to rely on livestock farming and agriculture.
